Getting Paid
Students may find themselves working in positions where cash payments are made and little documentation is provided.
It is important that all pay slips contain complete and accurate information....for students and everyone else.
The law in NSW says that employees must be paid in cash, or by cheque, or by electronic funds transfer. If an employee is paid by cheque or electronic funds transfer they must give their approval to be paid in this way. The applicable award or enterprise agreement may list the method of payment.
At the same time someone is paid, they must be given a pay slip. Students should check this to make sure that they have been paid for all of the hours worked and that the correct personal income tax has been deducted. The employer must send this to the tax office for the employee. (It is called Pay As You Go - PAYEG - tax). Cash payments are more difficult to verify but they must also be accompanied by a pay slip.
